Frank Scaturro Announces Candidacy

New Hyde Park resident and Chaminade grad Frank Scaturro is hoping three times is the charm as he announces his candidacy for U.S. Congress.

This will be Scaturro's third attempt to unseat Democratic incumbent Rep. Carolyn McCarthy in the 4th congressional district. He is seeking the Republican and Conservative nominations for the 2014 race.

Scaturro lost the Republican primary in both 2010 and 2012 to Nassau County Legis. Francis Becker. He ran on the Conservative Party line last year, which enabled him to still face Becker and McCarthy in the general election.

"I’ve run previously, and while I did not prevail, I believe this is my time and yours. While I wish I were proven wrong, virtually every major problem in Washington I identified earlier has gotten worse," he said.

Scaturro has written or co-authored four books and multiple articles about U.S. history and constitutional law and has been a partner at FisherBroyles LLP, in New Hyde Park since 2011. He served as counsel for the Constitution on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee for four years (2005 to 2009) and was a visiting professor at Hofstra Law School from 2009 to 2010.

He said "increasingly unmanageable debt levels and crushing tax burdens punish those who work."
 
“Our taxes keep going up, yet we keep getting less in return," he said. "Except, of course, for those who—unlike you and me—find ways to 'game' the system.  Meanwhile, those of us who played by the rules and saved our hard-earned income are punished by a devalued dollar—a hidden tax—that effectively depletes our pensions, IRAs and savings.
 
“Maybe that’s why 1.2 million New Yorkers left the state during the last decade.  Maybe that’s why so many of our young do not see a future here and so many seniors can no longer afford to stay."

McCarthy, who won her ninth term in 2012 with nearly 62 percent of the vote, has served the district since 1996. In June, she announced her intentions to "continue her mission in Congress" after a lung cancer diagnosis.

"I will continue to be a strong advocate for the 4th congressional district — and I remain committed to improving Long Island’s schools, improving public health and safety, improving our economy and protecting our seniors and veterans,” the former nurse said in a statement announcing her diagnosis. 
  
Scaturro said under new leadership, members of the next Congress must change course. He criticizes Democrats that "rammed through Congress a new entitlement, Obamacare," saying it threatens health, jobs and the economy.

"As so many of us predicted, Obamacare is an administrative nightmare and despite the unequivocal promise of President Obama and his allies, you are not guaranteed that you will be able to keep your old health plan," he said.

"You are not guaranteed that you will be able to see your old doctor. But you almost certainly are guaranteed that your health care costs will go up. Those who passed the law kept their promises only to themselves—by carving out their own special exemptions."

Scaturro believes the country needs to return to "common sense, liberty and free markets" and says it's time to fight back.

“Washington has so badly failed us that our problems demand a fresh start under new leadership," he said. “Since my first major endeavor to serve the public, when I stood up to entrenched bureaucrats who had betrayed the public trust, I have never backed down from a challenge. I know from experience that in the end, perseverance in doing what is right wins the day.”

The 4th Congressional district includes Baldwin, East Meadow, East Rockaway, Elmont, the Five Towns, Lynbrook, Floral Park, Franklin Square, Garden City, Hempstead, Malverne, Mineola, Carle Place, New Hyde Park, Oceanside, Rockville Centre, Roosevelt, Uniondale, Valley Stream, West Hempstead, Bellmore, Merrick, Long Beach and Westbury.
