Malverne 5K Run/Walk for Education

Submitted by Jan Kasal, event coordinator

The horn will signal the start at 9 am on October 6th. The organizers, Malverne Educational and Fitness Foundation (MEFF), grouped all activities, including the registration under one roof—the high school. Having everything in just one location allows runners to find their clothes and refreshment at the finish instead of crossing the street.

The start of the 5K run stays at the usual location, Wicks Lane next to the H.T. Herber middle school. Keeping up with tradition of having the T-shirt design different each year, a design contest was announced via email blast to Malverne high school alumni, past 5K run participants, and printed notice in LI Herald weekly newspaper. Design submissions were posted on the event website and the running community had an opportunity to choose the design theme for this year.

A Lynbrook resident, George Matthaei is the author of the design that gathered the most votes and will be presented with a check for $100 at the award ceremony after the 5K run. At 8:30, there will be a kids race. This year, it will be timed, starting at the intersection of Pershing and Langdon Blvds in Lakeview and ending at the 5K run finish line.

After the successful collaboration last year, the Malverne 5K and Fly with the owls run organizers embarked on even more ambitious plan. They teamed up with neighboring distinct community runs and created a ‘Southwestern Nassau Run Series’. The series include, in chronological order, Malverne 5 Run for Education (Oct. 6), Inwood 5K Run for Education (Oct. 13), Five Towns Community Chest 5K Run (Oct. 20), and Fly with The Owls 4M Run (Nov. 16). The participants in all four runs will be entitled to discounted registration fee and special prizes.

The Malverne 5K Run is a major fundraising event for Malverne Educational and Fitness Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to support youth projects in the school district. It contributed towards the Frost Valley trip, track & field restoration, Backyard Habitat project, classroom culinary trip to name just few recent projects.
