More Than 600 Runners Fly with the Owls

Story by Rosemary Leonetti

A total of 622 participants streamed into Lynbrook from all over the metropolitan area for the 9th Annual Fly with the Owls 4-Mile Run/Walk.

The run attracted competitive runners and walkers, as well as many who just wanted to get out to share a sense of community and help raise money for youth programs in Lynbrook. In keeping with the spirit of community, the event included a Half-Mile Fun Run for Lynbrook’s youngest runners.

Chris Mammone of Massapequa was the first runner to cross the finish line, taking first place overall and first in the Male Division with a time of 20:28. Elodie Pinot of Brooklyn won the Female Division with time of 25:38. Peter Hawkins of Malverne, an annual participant in the race, finished first in the Physically-Challenged Male category with a time of 19:47. Bill Benson of Valley Stream, who at 94 was the oldest competitor in the race, finished with an impressive time of 1:20:07.
