Storm Hits West Hempstead, Lynbrook and Malverne

Heavy winds knock down trees and utility poles, causing outages in the neighborhood.

Winds steadily picked up speed throughout the late afternoon and into the evening Saturday in Malverne, West Hempstead and Lynbrook.

By 6:30 p.m., the strong winds had already pulled down a thick tree and a utility pole on Jennings Avenue in West Hempstead, causing power outages to roughly 74 Long Island Power Authority customers in the area. (Check out these photos sent in from reader Manuel Torres.) Shortly after, it started downpouring in the neighborhood.

An additional 15 LIPA customers in Malverne (near Ocean Avenue) and a handful in Lynbrook and the northern section of West Hempstead (near Nassau Boulevard and Hempstead Turnpike) were also without power, as of 7 p.m. Check back for more updates.
