Malverne Community Theatre's 'A Grimm Night' a Gruesome Good Time

The Malverne Community Theatre's Halloween season production of "A Grimm Night" did not disappoint.

The show was designed to celebrate the Brothers Grimm and their "particular brand of gruesome folk tales." The staged reading took place in front of a packed crowd on Oct. 25 and 26 in the house of the Malverne Historical Society.

"The concept of the show was very simple - we wanted to tell stories to people around a fire, which is what we did," said David Coonan, President of the Malverne Community Theatre.

"My hope is that it was entertaining and that the audience got some shock value from the gruesomeness of the Grimms' tales, learned some new stories, and laughed a little at our levity," he said.

Coonan said the turnout was terrific and featured four performances by Bruce Liby, Michael Pagano, Stephannie Ciantro, Marie Reardon, and Coonan.

"All of the performances were special in their own way, but I truthfully feel that the second performance  on Friday was a real stand out show," Coonan said. "I don't think it was any better or worse than any of the others - I believe in consistency - but I feel like we really hit our stride with that one."

Up next for the community theatre is the performance of a short play called "Last of the Tannenbaums" by Daniel Guyton, to be performed at the Lighting of Malverne. The performance will be the premiere of this new play, which is the story of the last evergreen in the forest before it becomes a Christmas tree.
