First Step to Fit Kids - Get Moving

I watched an episode of "Weight of the Nation" and realized that we need to do something fast to keep our children healthy. Here's one way.

Monday night, after our holiday fixin's were all put away, the kids bathed and tucked into their beds, I sat still long enough to catch a few minutes of "Weight of the Nation."  Can you say mind blowing?  I knew that many of the foods we consume aren't healthy.  I know that.  I am also aware that soda and most juices aren't healthy.  What has been on my mind all day is that there are communities without playgrounds and grocery stores.  How could this be?  Isn't this America? How is it that we have communities like this in the best country on earth?  In addition, there are more farms growing corn to produce corn syrup than there are farms growing fruits and vegetables.  Now, I understand why most of the fruit I see at King Kullen and other nearby grocery stores are coming from Chile.  I think this is absolutely absurd.

If you haven't noticed by now, I am a huge fan of First Lady Michelle Obama. When I attended a fundraiser a few months ago, I was more excited to see her than I was President Obama.  No offense POTUS.  What I admire most about her, among other things, is that she has brought the epidemic of childhood obesity to the forefront of our minds and created the "Let's Move" movement.  It is especially important to me because I have two small children.  The environment they are in now and habits they form now will have a huge impact on how they lead the rest of their lives when they turn 18 and leave home.  Yes, they are leaving home at 18.

We can continue the discussion of healthy eating later, but I think it's very important to keep our children active.  I am guilty in allowing my children to watch more TV than they should.  The shows must be educational in addition to entertaining and be appropriate for their age group.  As mentioned before, they are very active.  They love the outdoors and could live outdoors if we allowed them.  However our backyard is also a favorite for mosquitos.  I try to take them to parks or indoor play areas to run around. Not only is it great exercise, but it also tires them out so they eat and sleep better.
