Port Schools Join the Green Lighting Revolution

The Port Washington School District has recently started to bring new LED lighting into the district to achieve significant energy savings.

The Port Washington School District has recently started to bring new LED lighting into the district to achieve significant energy savings. The district is now the first on Long Island to have access to this new product specifically designed to retrofit into high bay gym ceiling fixtures. The district has successfully completed 2 projects to replace these bulbs.

The Schreiber and Weber gymnasiums, like thousands of other school gyms, were using 275w High Pressure Sodium bulbs to light their space. Additionally, the bulb requires a 40w ballast, which increases the total wattage of the single bulb fixture to 315.  Smart Energy US has manufactures a direct retrofit LED lamp that reduces the wattage to a total of 80, a savings of 74% in electrical costs over the lifetime of the new LED bulb. This particular bulb is rated to last 50,000 hours which is approximately 5.71 years if the bulb is used 24/7. In the case of the school gym, the lights are used only 5 days per week for an average of 16 hours per day. If you account for the weekly hours and school vacations, these bulbs should last approximately 11 years without any maintenance required.

 After completing an energy audit of the gym lighting, Smart Energy US recommended an LED bulb designed specifically to retrofit high bay gym fixtures. The school did a mock up of 2 fixtures and it was determined that the application required an LED solution of 80W, 5000K color temp, and a beam angle of 40°. The Return on Investment (ROI) profile for the project is as follows:

Current Electrical Costs:                   $  17,690  per year at $.15 per KwH

New Electrical Costs:                        $    4,492  per year

Total Electric Savings:                       $  13,197  per year

In just 26 months, this project will be $ 1,100 per month Cash Flow Positive

As a long time Port resident, It is about time that the district is looking to the future with energy saving projects. As residents we should be front and center at the school board meetings so we can be assured that there is budget money set aside for these type of projects. These projects are just the tip of the iceberg and thank you Mr. Rubinstein for getting the ball rolling. Lets all stand up and make sure this is a priority for the future of our district.

Mr. Rubinstein, we have a commercial building with many outside lights which use a lot of energy, our building also has many of the old style florecent four foot type lights. What is the average savings for this type of building by changing to LED.

In this article you mention that an LED "bulb" was used to retrofit a High Bay gym fixture. Were you able to utilize the existing HID reflector and body change to an LED driver and screw in lamp? If so that would really drop the cost a lot to make this <a href=http://www.qbcusa.com/commercial-energy-efficient-lighting-technologies-that-work.html/> efficient lighting</a>.
