Get Out: Fly with the Owls, Shipwreck Anniversary
An in depth look at some upcoming weekend events.
Whether you’re looking to spend some time outdoors during the day or take in a cultural event in the evening, there are plenty of things to do without having to go far. Make it a memorable weekend by exploring one — or more — of these local events.
Take advantage of the mild fall weather and compete in the seventh annual Fly With The Owls run on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Lynbrook North Middle School.
“This is truly a community oriented and supported event,” said Cathy Papandrew, director of the four-mile race. “One hundred percent of our net proceeds will benefit youth and civic organizations and activities in the Village of Lynbrook.”

This marked the first year that Fly With The Owls offered a pre-race training program for those looking to get a head start on their preparations. In addition, race weekend will kick off with a Friday night pasta party in Greis Park on Horton Avenue at 5 p.m.
On race day, participants and spectators can expect personalized finish line announcing and photography, post-race massages, and refreshments from Lynbrook Bagels, Starbucks and Trader Joe’s. “We will also have fabulous raffle baskets,” Papandrew said. “Grand prizes include a watch donated by Papandrew Jewelers and a bicycle donated by Valley Stream Bicycle.” To register for the race and its surrounding events, visit flywiththeowls.com.

If a cultural event is more your speed, check out the Historical Society of East Rockaway and Lynbrook’s annual Shipwreck Ceremony on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Rockville Cemetery on Merrick Road.
The ceremony will mark the 175th anniversary of the shipwrecks of the Mexico and the Bristol, which occurred off the shoes of Rockaway Beach and Long Beach. “The two wrecks had a great impact on our culture in various aspects,” said Madeline Pearson, president of the Historical Society. “The victims were immigrants coming to America in search of new opportunities.”
Lynbrook historian and Historical Society member Art Mattson recently acquired an original oil painting depicting the Mexico shipwreck. Attendees will be able to view the painting following the ceremony. For additional information, call 516-887-7673.
