New Historical Display Plays 'Name Game' With West Hempstead

Stop by the West Hempstead Public Library to learn how popular local spots got their names.

Do you know how in West Hempstead got it's name?

No, it has nothing to do with hearing echoes. It actually stems from the first letters of the four original Little League teams who played there - the Eagles, the Cardinals, the Hawks and the Orioles. (Local lore also states that “Park” stands for four other teams, the Pelicans, Angels, Robins and Kinglets.)

Want to know how other landmarks and streets in West Hempstead got their names? You'll need to stop by the , where the West Hempstead Historical Society's third exhibit, "What's in a Name?... History," is on display from now through mid-June. (It's located on the wall between the library's Young Adult section and Video Collection.)

Want to become involved with the West Hempstead Historical Society? Meetings take place the third Wednesday of every month, September through June, in the second floor Conference Room of the West Hempstead Public Library between 11 a.m. and noon.  All are welcome to attend.
