"Cocktails and Curtain Calls" will ring in Malverne Community Theatre's second year

This Sunday, August 4th, we’re holding our second annual Cocktails and Curtain Calls fundraising event at Uva Rossa, a beautiful new Italian restaurant and wine bar in the heart of Malverne.

This party will serve as a great way to celebrate the accomplishments of the past year, while simultaneously giving us the the opportunity to mingle and socialize with our audience in a way that a regular show doesn’t allow. It’s our hope that we get to see some familiar faces, and some new ones, too.

This event will help raise some money so that we can continue on our mission of producing shows that are unique, creative, and fun to attend. Rarely plays are free, and often they are not cheap. Everyone who participates in the company does so on a volunteer basis - we do it for the love of theater - so every dollar we receive goes directly to the shows. We may not get paid for this, but that doesn’t mean we stray from our artistic standards or mission. My personal goal is to produce the best, most creative theatrical productions and continue to improve this company.

The admission price is $40. Included with that price you get delicious food, drinks, and a show. On the menu that evening are meatball sliders, margarita pizza, and risotto balls for the duration of the event, as well as red and white wine, soda, and sangria. The food at Uva Rossa is excellent, and you will not be disappointed.

Also included with admission is a performance of local playwright Steve Strangio’s short comedy “Fairely Speaking”. This play is about a couple at a renaissance faire who are having an argument, and one of the more dedicated faire participants tries to interject and help. It stars Steph Ciantro, James Weippert, and Michael Pagano.

This play was chosen as the showcase piece for a few reasons. First, it’s short, and for an event like this, staging Hamlet isn’t an option. Within those few minutes, however, you meet some very interesting characters and will see some memorable performances. It’s a little different, and being a little different is one of our major goals.

Strangio said that he wrote this play based on an actual experience he had at a Renaissance Faire. "Whenever wacky things like that happen to me, I just consider it as research for the play I'll soon write," he said. I think you’ll enjoy it.

Amidst all the food, drink, and acting, you’ll also be able to buy tickets to our raffle. We have over a dozen prizes; gifts from restaurant gift certificates to museum memberships, and a variety of others. It’s a terrific and eclectic group of prizes, and we think the raffle will be a highlight of the event.

Overall, Cocktails and Curtain Calls is a celebration. It’s a celebration of what we’ve done and what we will do. It’s a celebration of our growing audience, and a celebration of the arts.

It will be a fun evening. I hope you can join us.
