Small Businesses Need Residents….and Residents Need Small Businesses

It just makes sense that small business and residents need eachother. Here are four reasons why you should shop locally on Small Business Saturday.

This Saturday, Nov. 26, is Small Business Saturday. Many small businesses will offer deals, discounts, promotions, etc. to the local community. It is wise for these businesses to offer such deals and it is a good idea for residents to take these promotions for a number of reasons. The reasons include:

  1. Proximity: Think about it, if you shop locally and within your community, in most instances you could walk there, avoid the massive crowds at the malls and shopping centers, and still spend quality time with the family or friends.
  2. Friendship/Recognition: How many owners or workers do you know by face or by name as soon as you walk in? You see them around town and more than likely they know a little about your family and you know a little about theirs. A little personal conversation goes a long way for both residents and businesses.
  3. Deals generate “store traffic”: Traffic in a business usually means a sale in some form or another. “Store traffic” is better than no traffic, so this is good for the business. Residents will obviously save money and time.
  4. Taxes: These local businesses pay taxes in your town just like you do. The better their business does, the more taxes they pay. I’m not saying “I Love Taxes” but this is a reality. So…if residents support local businesses, businesses help to pay town taxes and school taxes, all of which may help to lower the residential portion of taxes when compared to a business not being in the town or closed.

So…on this coming Small Business Saturday, think about shopping locally, say hello to the worker in the aisle or to the cashier, and in the long run, you’ll see that supporting local businesses will help your community as well.
