Some School Related Sites That May Interest You

With the new school year taking off, you may want to consider adding these school-related Web sites to your browser.

With the start of the new school year now about four weeks in, I have compiled a list of some school related Web sites and a brief description of each, that you may wish to refer to in the coming months.

I’m sure there are a lot more sites out there, so please feel free to share if you know of any, but these will certainly get you started.  As you check out each site, please consider creating an "EDUCATION" folder and adding them to your browser as "FAVORITES."

  1. New York State Testing and Accountability Reporting Tool – “These Report Cards are produced to inform the people of New York State about the performance of public schools and districts. We hope that these reports are used in constructive conversations which lead to improved education for all children in the State.” https://www.nystart.gov/publicweb/Splash.do
  2. New York State School Boards Association – “The New York State School Boards Association serves as the statewide voice of more than 700 boards of education. The collective influence of some 5,000 school board members, who constitute half the elected officials in the state, enables the Association to work toward the benefit of the elementary and secondary public school system in New York State. School board members are the educational leaders of their communities; they determine policies that govern the operation of their local public school system. The Association provides current information and advice on matters affecting school boards and cooperates with other educational and related organizations in promoting excellence in education. Consistent with our dedication to children, learning and the community, the Association provides advocacy information, leadership development and custom services to public school boards.” http://www.nyssba.org/
  3. See Through NY - “…giving New Yorkers a clearer view of how their state and local tax dollars are spent. This site is sponsored by the Empire Center for New York State Policy, part of the non-partisan and non-profit Manhattan Institute for Policy Research. SeeThroughNY is a web portal -- and more.  It's designed to become the hub of a statewide network through which taxpayers can share, analyze and compare data from counties, cities, towns, villages, school districts and public authorities throughout New York. “    http://seethroughny.org/
  4. Great Schools – “Headquartered in San Francisco, GreatSchools also operates local programs in Washington, D.C., Milwaukee, WI, and Newark, NJ. In these cities, GreatSchools publishes annual School Chooser guides and distributes them at no cost to thousands of parents so they can make more informed choices about where to send their children to school.” http://www.greatschools.org/
  5. National PTA – “As the largest volunteer child advocacy association in the nation, National Parent Teacher Association® (PTA) provides parents and families with a powerful voice to speak on behalf of every child and the best tools to help their children be safe, healthy, and successful—in school and in life.” http://www.pta.org/Index.asp
  6. New York State United Teachers – “NYSUT is more than 600,000 people who work in, or are retired from, New York's schools, colleges, and healthcare facilities. We are classroom teachers, college and university faculty and professional staff, school bus drivers, custodians, secretaries, cafeteria workers, teacher assistants and aides, nurses and healthcare technicians.” http://www.nysut.org/cps/rde/xchg/nysut/hs.xsl/index.htm
  7. The IXL Website allows children to review and take practice Math questions by grade. http://www.ixl.com/math/grades
  8. Your School District - It goes without saying that you should know your local School District Web site. As I am a West Hempstead resident, mine is www.whufsd.com.

I hope you can utilize these sites during the school year as I have because they are a great source of information.
