WHUFSD Student Technology Demonstration

No pens, pencils, or paper needed...what kind of school is this? WHUFSD gets Techie....

I was able to attend the Student Technology Demonstration with my family Tuesday night at West Hempstead High School. Because of limited time, I could only attend two of the seven sessions offered.

For the first session, I watched as my fourth grade son (Dan) and his classmates (Rachel Duman, Josef Schindler, Gabriella Schindler, Michael Mistretta, Ciara Cole) used the Interactive Whiteboard and did a "virtual lab" on electricity circuits, conductors and insulators. A computer was also used so that students could answer questions. The software used was FUSION Science Text and Discovery Education. The kids seemed very comfortable with the technology and enjoyed the lesson....and the parents did as well. Special Thanks to Mrs. Ganley, Ms. Schwartz, Ms. Russo, and Ms. Manfrey. Superintendent Mr. Hogan, Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Peluso and High School Principal Mr. Rehman popped in along with Board of Education Trustees Mr. Schindler, Mrs. Rilling and Mrs. DiMiceli.

The second session I attended was full of high school students, Deputy Superintendent Mr. Cunningham, Mr. Rehman again (this guy is everywhere), and Teachers Mr. Brown and Mr. Castoro. I was immediately given an iPad2 to use by Mr. Brown and was asked to post my vote to a multiple choice question asking what I thought was the best benefit of students using technology...My first participation in the Poll Everywhere software. Mr. Brown then told me about Evernote and Edmodo software. All the software mentioned was free and was accessible through the Internet via a transportable wireless wifi cart that could be moved from classroom to classroom....very cool!

A student (I believe his name was Sean) further demonstrated that he could take notes in class, access the notes on his iPhone and told me he could print them at home. Thus no pens, pencils, or paper are needed in this class! Sean (geez...I hope I got this kid's name right..) and I had a laugh when I then told him that there was no excuse why he could not study for a test or do homework.

The evening ended with a quick trip to the Board of Education meeting where the participating students received a certificate and were recognized by the Board of Education, Central Administration, parents, teachers and fellow classmates.

Much thanks goes to the WHUFSD as this was a GREAT way to get kids, parents, teachers, and the BOE together for a fun AND educational event.

Go Rams!
