This Week's Top PIcks: July 30-Aug. 5

The Mommy's Guide shares with you their three top picks for the week, along with what free museum they love the best, right here on Long Island!

Hello Everyone!

This week's events are kind of slow, but that does not mean there is nothing to do. Check out our list of free or low cost museums, play places that we love, and local parks that are listed with addresses.

My absolute favorite free place to take my son is the Queens County Farm Museum. It is about a 15-minute drive (maybe 20 from Lynbrook) but is completely worth it. The Queens County Farm holds special events all year round. Some of them we have even posted here, but I love it best on one of its normal “boring days."  It is usually very quiet, you can visit the cows that are right by the front gate and feed them apples from the tree. They have chickens, pigs, sheep and goats all around the farm grounds and you can buy feed to give to them.

It's amazingly quiet, and the people are very friendly. The old houses and barns give you the feel of being on an old-time farm, and the very best part about it ... it's FREE. All the money you do spend there (if you buy a gift from the shop, a bottle of wine, feed for the animals) will go to the farm, so even if you wind up spending a little dough, it's okay; It goes to a great cause!

Now, for this weeks top picks

  • Thursday, Aug. 2, Outdoor Movie Night: Wizard of Oz

Did you guys know that they are making another Wizard of Oz movie? It won't be a redo. I don't think they could really re-make the original. (Then again, there is a movie based on the Battleship game, so who knows?) This movie will be about how the Wizard got to Oz, and will be played by James Franco. Looks interesting, but until then you can watch the original for free on the big screen this Thursday night.

When: Aug. 2, 2012 at dusk

Where: Eisenhower Park, East Meadow NY 11552 Lakeside Theater

More Info: (516)572-0200

  • Saturday, Aug. 4, Garvies Point Day

Here you can enjoy programs and crafts scheduled all day long, events such as birdwatching, mineral identification and a butterfly garden tour. This is yet another place I have yet to get to, but I do believe I will be here Saturday. They hold such amazing events at such a low price. If you have attended other areas with butterfly gardens, you know the cost goes up way past the $5 you will pay here. so that alone is worth the trip out there.

When: Aug. 4, 10a.m.-4 p.m.

Where:50 Barry Drive, Glen Cove NY 11542

Cost: $5 for everyone four and up

  • Sunday, Aug. 5, Old Time Baseball Game

No not old timers, old time. See how baseball was played before the multi-million dollar a year salaries at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Game will be played with nineteenth century rules and attire.  I have not been here yet, but I am really interested in going and seeing the old time game and outfits. If you go please let us know how it is!

When: Aug. 5, 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Where: Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage NY 11804

Cost: $10 Adult, $7 Children ages 5-12

That's my picks for this week.  For more outdoor movies, a free Pinkalious show, fireworks, farmers markets, and other events going on, read more....
