Joseph Grabczak, a Holocaust survivor and former Lynbrook resident, died peacefully Wednesday at his Fair Lawn, N.J. home, surrounded by his family. He was 92.
Grabczak was the beloved husband of the late Jeannie (nee Warheit) Grabczak, devoted father to Gilda S. Altman, her husband, David, Ellen Myron and her husband, Benjamin, and a cherished grandfather to Stephanie and Lauryn Altman, and Jamie Lynn and Veronica Desposito.
According to an obituary published on Jan. 18 in the Record/Herald News, a New Jersey daily newspaper, Grabczak had worked as a cutter in the garment industry in New York City. A Holocaust survivor himself, Grabczak is credited with organizing the Survivor's Group in Cedarhurst 22 years ago, reports the paper. He also appeared in a 2004 documentary called "Paper Clips," which explored the Holocaust through a project that students at a Tennesse Middle School undertook.
Services were held Friday in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. Grabczak was later buried at Mount Ararat Cemetery in Farmingdale.
