James B. Dempsey, 61, Nassau Detective

Staple at Chaminade High School passed away on Sept. 22, 2013.

James B. Dempsey of Lynbrook passed away on Sept. 22, 2013 at the age of 61. He was born in the Bronx on Feb. 8, 1952.

He moved to Lynbrook with his family in 1960, where he met his wife, Estelle Kelly Dempsey, 59, and started a family. He was a graduate of Maria Regina High School, now known as Kellenberg Memorial High School, in Uniondale before graduating at Lynbrook High School. He would later earn an associate degree from Nassau Community College.

Dempsey also routinely provided security at Chaminade High School, his sons' alma mater, when the school hosted a dance.

In 1972 Dempsey joined the Nassau County Police Department working in numerous divisions including robbery and asset forfeiture across a career that spanned 37 years.

He is survived by his wife and sons Brendan, Terrence and Daniel, daughters Sheila and Clare; siblings Thomas Dempsey of Chicago, and Jane Stewart, John Dempsey and Susan Chajkowski of Lynbrook.

A wake was held on Sept. 25-26. A funeral mass was held on Sept. 27 at Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Lynbrook with internment at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.

Memorial donations may be made to The Roseann Ferrigno Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Nassau County Detective's Association Charitable Fund.
