South Shore Laundromats Open For Business

Editor’s Note: This article was written and submitted by Stephen Fiorentine.

Long Island residents unable to do laundry due to loss of power or damages to their home can take solace in the fact that many laundry services are open for business across the south shore.

With many Long Islanders in need of clean clothes and other household items, laundry services on the island have seen an influx of business since Hurricane Sandy.

In Rockville Centre, customers funneled in and out of Unk’s Laundromat to pick up their freshly laundered clothes. The store is offering both drop off and self service, but has had to close its self service at times to meet the high demands for drop offs.

After taking in customers from Long Beach and other areas hit hard by the storm, Jim-Jam Drive In Cleaners in Merrick had to temporarily stop taking in orders due to the limited amount of space left.

Customers in need of an affordable option can go to MDS Laundry in Bellmore, where they are charging around 69 cents/lb, but are offering a discount to customers with larger loads.

For customers looking to clean or salvage clothes that were ruined by flooding or other effects of the storm, most stores will take clothes whether they are brought in wet or dry.

The following is a list of laundromats that are open for business and the options that they offer:

  • Centre Avenue Superwash in East Rockaway (89 cents/lb, drop off only)
  • MDS Laundry in Bellmore (69 cents/lb, both drop off and self service)
  • Castle II Laundromat in Bellmore
  • Jim-Jam Drive In Cleaners in Merrick (price depends on garment)
  • Clean Scout Scrubadub in Oceanside (85 cents/lb, self serve)
  • Unk’s Laundromat in Rockville Centre (85 cents/lb, both drop off and self service)

@Meg: "I don't know about that specific one but I saw two others open on Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead and a third on Hempstead Avenue in West Hempstead." - that's from our Malverne-West Hempstead-Lynbrook editor, Tara Conry. Hope it helps! Jaime Sumersille Regional Editor, Nassau County

There's a laundromat open across from the Gibson LIRR station (Dubois Ave). That area never lost power (the pizza and Chinese food places are open, too).

There is a huge Laundry Palace that has re-opened in Valley Stream on Merrick Road by Rockaway Avenue.
