Changes Needed at Lynbrook Train Trestle Crossing

Should tractor trailers be banned from this underpass on Merrick Road?

After a tractor trailer carrying two construction vehicles smacked into a Long Island Railroad train trestle on Merrick Road in Lynbrook Thursday evening, a number of Patch readers told us this is not the first time an accident occurred at this very spot.

"There have been a significant amount of tractor-trailer accidents over the years at that very place. Some included fatalities," wrote one reader who goes by the name Concerned Citizen. "It's also dangerous because of the narrow lanes, which curve right before the bridge heading eastbound. Mixing tractor-trailers and autos in narrow lanes with curves plus a low bridge is a formula which many citizens have paid for with their lives."

This reader asked if something could be done to make this intersection safer. Another suggested that all tractor trailers be banned from using the underpass.
