Family Forum: Holiday Traveling With Kids

A weekly conversation with the Patch Family Council.

Once a week on Lynbrook and Five Towns Patches, we're going to post Family Forum, an interactive feature in which village families can discuss, debate or brainstorm parenting ideas with fellow families.

Our  Patch Family Council, currently comprised of three Lynbrook residents and two Five Towns residents, will help get the conversation started. All residents are welcome to comment, though we do ask that all commenters be courteous and respectful of one another.

This week's question is: I'm traveling with my young kids for the holidays. How do I keep them occupied during the trip?

Whether I am traveling with my kids on a plane or my personal choice, the car...I always make sure I pack them each a bag with things that they want to do. Those bags usually include the DS, books, coloring books for my daughter, sports magazines for my son and snacks. We try to limit the drinks so there aren't too many bathroom breaks! We also choose a few movies that they both want to watch and play them on the DVD player in the car. Sometimes we make a playlist of music to listen to on the IPod. If we are driving a far distance, we like to discuss the states we drive through and facts about them My son also likes to watch the mile markers on the side of the road. I find if they have enough to keep them occupied, they are happier and my husband and I are too!
