On the Town: Beware Fake Water Workers

Beware of imposters posing as public utility workers…particularly, those claiming connection with New York American Water.

A rash of such fraudulent activity has been reported in the area.  Residents, be on your guard.  Take precautionary steps to protect yourself against potential home intruders and scams.

If you suspect that an individual is falsely identifying him or herself as a public utility employee, contact New York American Water’s 24-hour Customer Service Center at 1-877-426-6999 to verify the individual’s identity.  The customer service representatives are trained to confirm assigned work locations.

Please take the following precautions when a utility worker rings your doorbell:

- Request proper identification and photo I.D.

- Check for the New York American Water logo on uniforms and vehicles.  New York American Water employees always use properly marked vehicles when making official visits.  Its employees do not call on customers in unmarked vehicles.

- If a utility worker comes to your home unexpectedly, do not let that individual in.  When in doubt, call New York American Water at 1-877-426-6999 to verify that there are workers scheduled to arrive at your residence.

Beware of imposters.  Don’t take chances!  Call and confirm.
