Talk Back: Should There Be More Gun Control Laws?

In the wake of two large shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin, is it time to reconsider gun control laws?

Only weeks after a deadly shooting rampage left 12 people dead and 58 wounded in an Aurora, Colorado movie theatre, a gunman in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, killing six before his life was taken by a responding police officer.

The Aurora shooting, an allegedly pre-meditated event during a midnight showing of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," heightened fears on gun safety only hours after the shooting occured on July 20th. The accused gunman, James Holmes, was found to have mental problems, but had the ability to purchase multiple weapons that he used on his rampage.

While information about Sunday's shooting continues to be released by law enforcement in Wisconsin, mass shootings have dominated the country's news over the last few decades including the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007 that killed 33 people and the Columbine High School shooting in 1999 that left 15 dead, including the two shooters.

Events like these shootings commonly have raised the question we pose to you, East Meadow: Should there be stricter gun control laws? Would such laws help prevent a horrible event like these shootings? Are gun control laws of any kind a threat to the Second Amendment right to bear arms?

We want to hear everything you have to say. Leave us a comment below!

There are enough gun laws on the books. We have a Constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Maybe if the laws would enforced and people punished for their crimes there would be less violent crimes. I don't understand how people think that banning law abiding citizens from owning guns will keep guns out of the hands of criminals. Criminals will still obtain "illegal guns" and use them. Let the police do their jobs and arrest the criminal element then violent crime will go down. Just remember guns don't kill people. People kill people!

N. Y. State has some of the strongest gun laws in the country which only the honest gun owners follow criminals dont care how many gun laws you have it dosent affect them . I have been a licenced gun owner for over 40 years and I belive if you can pass a backround check you should have the right to carry a firearm if you want to I know a lot of people will disagree but it is aproven fact that states that have the the right to carry law crime has gone down .

Getting a permit should be cheaper. The cost is prohibitive to many people. I guess in Nassau county only the well off get to protect themselves.

There are already plenty of GUN LAWS in our state. The issue is that most of the crimes committed with guns are done with illegal guns NOT legal, registered firearms. A criminal minded individual will not pay the high cost of permits/license, do a background check, finger prints, file paperwork with the state and then wait for several weeks to be cleared and then buy the weapon- He goes to anyone of the know crime areas and puts the word out on the street and gets a gun- and the person he gets it from is not a business owner who deals in arms, he too is a criminal minded individual. So the LAWS on the books delay, prevent and deter LEGAL GUN OWNERSHIP while not lowering the actual crimes committed by illegal guns. Other states embrace our heritage of hunting and marksmanship....it teaches responsibility, tradition, and conservation as well as builds character, discipline and bonds a child to a parent ( there are many woman gun owners out there). The firearm is a tool that does as the operator dictates... Guns do not kill people- Crazy people kill people. Take away the guns and you take away the power of Free people and would build a dictatorship, where you give the Government the power to control the people... If there were no firearms available, people who's intent is to kill others will find a thousand other ways to achieve that goal.
