30 People Treated After Carbon Monoxide Scare at Best Yet Market

Store on West Hempstead border evacuated Friday morning after high CO level reported.

High levels of carbon monoxide at the Best Yet Market on the West Hempstead border caused an evacuation of the store Friday morning.

A total of 30 people were treated -- 18 were transported to an area hospital while 12 people were treated at the scene, police said.

Fourth Precinct police officers responded to the store, located at 696 Dogwood Ave. in Franklin Square, for the report of a foul odor in the building. Police said then officers arrived, they discovered numerous persons suffering from headaches, dizziness and nausea.

Franklin Square Fire Department arrived at the scene and detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide inside the store, police said.

The Nassau County Police Department HazMat Unit and National Grid responded to the scene. Ambulances from Franklin Square, West Hempstead, Elmont, Hempstead, Lakeview, Rockville Centre and Mineola Fire Departments assisted at scene.

The Nassau County Fire Marshall’s Office was also present.
