Bank Robber Charged in West Hempstead Heist

Donald McCallum, 51, of Hempstead, was arrested for bank robberies in West Hempstead and Garden City.

Cops have arrested a Hempstead man who they say robbed a Capital One Bank in West Hempstead last week.

Garden City and Nassau County police caught Donald McCallum, 51 of Hempstead, on Tuesday as he fled from a TD Bank in Garden City with approximately $1,300 he allegedly stole. After further investigation, they say they discovered that McCallum is also responsible for a at Capital One Bank located at 611 Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead.

Bringing McCallum into custody was no easy task. According to police, he entered the TD Bank located at 855 Franklin Avenue in Garden City at approximately 10:53 a.m. on Feb. 22 and passed a note demanding money to a teller.

After obtaining approximately $1,300, police say McCallum fled the bank on foot northbound on Franklin Avenue. Sighted by responding Garden City police officer Walsh running from the scene, McCallum was apprehended with assistance from other Garden City officers and, after a struggle, was placed under arrest at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Eleventh Street. Three Garden City officers sustained minor injuries during the arrest and were treated at scene. Another Garden City officer sustained a sprained shoulder and was treated at Winthrop-University Hospital and released, according to Inspector Kenneth Jackson.  

Proceeds from the Garden City bank robbery were recovered, as was a stun gun police say McCallum had in his possession.

After Nassau County Robbery Squad detectives further investigated, the subject was also charged with the West Hempstead robbery - two counts of third-degree robbery. He was slated for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
