Barbarino: Prom, Graduation Not Canceled

Lynbrook superintendent discusses Friday's graffiti incident.

Lynbrook School District Superintendent Dr. Santo Barbarino confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the high school's prom and graduation have not been canceled.

"The prom is not canceled," Barbarino told Patch. "And I heard people say graduation too, that's not canceled."

Multiple parents told Patch that students were allegedly threatened with losing prom and graduation on the last day of classes Friday morning after was found behind Lynbrook High School.

"[Principal] Rainis never said 'If we don't find out who these people are, we're going to cancel the prom' — that was never said," Barbarino told Patch.

A photo sent to Lynbrook Patch Friday morning confirmed that a graphic anti-Semitic phrase, along with several other obscene graffiti markings, was posted on the back of the school.

"The police are doing an investigation and that's as much as we know at this point," Barbarino said. "I believe they're making some progress and we're looking to hopefully get this all resolved as quickly as possible."

What is your gut feeling Paul?
senior June 12, 2012 at 10:57 PM
The reactions and comments surrounding this whole situation is rediculous . Lynbrook is a good school. 563 isn't a serious gang, its what a group of guys like to call themselves...they're harmless.. I would know I am in their grade....we don't all do drugs and drink...most of us are actually doing positive things with our lives ...its sad what you all think we are because of one act...and its not even proven to be a senior ...even a lynbrook student at all ...stop pointing fingers and let the authorities do their job..your gut feeling isn't A FACT its just a silly assumption! Please feel free to post your opinion, but before you assume the worst of us seniors..make sure you get the facts right ..
Robert June 12, 2012 at 10:59 PM
They encouraged this behavior with the media blast. Let's hope they only pick one group of people. Think about it. Im with the other guy let's all get parking tickets We are famous for that.

TRUE THAT PAUL
Disappointed June 12, 2012 at 11:45 PM
Oh and just two more things ... if the grammar and spelling in some of these comments is indicative of the education at LHS ... WOW !!! Drugs really do destroy brain cells and I wonder ... What would have been done had another religion (guess which one) been attacked ?

So Victoria and Kahuna, I assume that you feel the Seniors should all be punished over the stupid acts of a few? All the kids should suffer?
Brian June 13, 2012 at 01:13 AM
Wimps? What is your problem?! Really, please, for the sake of all mankind, stop watching fox and get off your high horse. Otherwise, move to texas, where judges jail honor students who miss school because they dont't have any way to get to school.
Brian June 13, 2012 at 01:16 AM
its truly incredible how many people here have a warped sense of justice, truly astounding
CG June 13, 2012 at 01:23 AM
Which one?
Claire Martin June 13, 2012 at 03:15 AM
The issue isn't that the students should or shouldn't be punished---its that the administration should not make a threat unless they plan to stick too it. We all knew the administration would back down
Tom Garrett June 13, 2012 at 12:43 PM
Paul, My comment was meant for BK, hehehehe
Robert June 13, 2012 at 01:06 PM
There should be DVR video systems in in operation on that school 24/7. It would help to prevent lots of stuff.
Abbey Dennison June 13, 2012 at 01:37 PM
@Robert - there is a video system in operation and has video of the people who did this. However the kids who did this - covered some of the cameras and shined bright lights into others. They knew what they were doing. Again it all happened as part of Senior Prank Day.
Mark reyes June 13, 2012 at 02:45 PM
Claire, the bottom line is that whatever was done it caused people to come forward with information. Did you want the district to punish the entire Senior class over the stupid act of a few? Is that right?
Class of 2012 June 13, 2012 at 03:05 PM
@Abbey Dennison I don't know what seniors you think you're referring to, but the seniors at LHS did not find this to be a funny "prank." We were, and still are, just as disgusted as every other resident of Lynbrook. I understand that everyone wants justice brought to this situation (seniors included), but unless anyone is a valid member of the investigation, essentially his/her argument is moot. Yes, the administration should've been a little wiser in the situation. Yes, parents should have better control on their kids. But let's not overgeneralize here: Lynbrook students are among some of the finest and we don't want our grade's reputation to be tarnished, along with the town's. I think when Mr. Rainus is announcing the colleges that the class of 2012 will be attending at graduation, the town will see that we aren't all that bad.
the big kahuna June 13, 2012 at 03:25 PM
no im not. wake up!! there was damage done to the scholl on sr prank day. How about I give you that bill?? The administration must get tougher. I dont want to see all of the kids punished but at some pouint they have to say enough. This isnt the first time there have been problems. WHat sould we do wait until they get worse????
Theresa Vicchinio June 13, 2012 at 03:41 PM
@Class of 2012 - was it funny then to instead have cruelty to animals as part of the core of Senior Prank day? We do not know who did this yet - but the timing with Senior Prank day was not just an unlucky coincidence, What college you get into does not define who you are - what you do with your life defines who you are.
the big kahuna June 13, 2012 at 06:28 PM
amen!! Maybe Tom Garret should take notice of this.
Mark reyes June 13, 2012 at 06:34 PM
Class of 2012 Great post. So let me get this right. A couple of kids in the Senior class let out a few frogs and now they are being accused of cruelty to animals? It never ends.
the big kahuna June 13, 2012 at 07:11 PM
so let me get this right- they defaced public property/slandered a principal/destroyed the bathrooms of the school/let crickets go in school as part of the prank/had major fight on atlantic ave and wrote anti semetic remarks on a wall and you all think this is no big deal??? WOW! Cna wait till they kill someone. Will you blame the school??? I think not. Let the goods kids give up the names of hte bad and this will alll go away.
Lynbrook Senior June 13, 2012 at 07:53 PM
Some of these comments are so ridiculous and ignorant., no one ever destroyed bathrooms, there was no "major fight" on atlantic ave, and letting crickets go in the school is not exactly a felony.... the students of Lynbrook High School are just as disgusted with the vandalism and anti-semetism as the rest of the community. We do not want to be represented in this way, and it is wrong to assume that we are a bad group of students because of one ridiculous act. And anyone who believes the prom should be cancelled, that's easy for you to say because it won't affect you in any way, but think of all the seniors who have worked so hard for the past four years and would like to enjoy the right of passage that everyone else gets to experience. It is so rude of these comments to be so harsh on the hard-working students of the Lynbrook community and honestly its extremely offensive.
Just saying... June 13, 2012 at 11:15 PM
Every one who's slandering the class of 2012 needs to relax and check his grammer. It was definitely two or three seniors (or juniors..?) who vandalized the school, not the entire class of 200 kids. Keeping in mind the members of the 563, the real question is- would they be graduating anyway? Taking away graduation and prom for the entire grade wouldn't even affect the kids that committed the crime. It was considerate of the Administration to realize punishing the entire grade would be a waste considering this grade has been the best to ever pass through Lynbrook High School. Think about it- the class of 2012 has graduates joining the military and going to ivy league schools. The last time the seniors won class night was when the class of 2012 were freshmen. The class of 2012 has the highest GPA of any of the graduating classes in the history of Lynbrook High School (or so I've heard).
Tom Garrett June 14, 2012 at 12:25 PM
Lynbrook Senior, You should view this incident as a learning experience now that you’re moving on into the real world. You will find as time goes on that the evil and stupidity of the few not only tarnish the good of the many it also affects negatively their rights and freedoms as authority adjusts for their failures and tries to prevent a repeat of the actions of the few. The examples of what I speak of are endless, look for them and you will see if you choose to. You will also find that the Media brings more attention and sensationalism to events and as you are aware no shortage of opinion, right, wrong or indifferent. Don’t let latter get to you it’s unfortunately now just part of the process, remember opinions are just that opinions, not facts…. I’m certain the majority of your Class has done well and played by the rules and you know that as well, go enjoy your Prom and celebrate your Graduation you have earned it! Good Luck to you and the entire Senior Class.
Jane Kern June 14, 2012 at 01:00 PM
Everyone needs to sit back and look at the overall seriousness of this. This was not just simple graffitti. This is being treated as a hate and bias crime and it IS a serious issue. The closeness to senior prank day places all the heat on the senior class. While some want to sweep this under the rug it shouldn't be. We cant tolerate the kind of hate that was shown in this grafitti. Now was the adiminstration correct in making these threats - well the real problem was that they had no intention in following through. Hopefully one of the things you learn from this is the seriousness of the issue
the big kahuna June 14, 2012 at 01:06 PM
then work with the administration to get them the names of the people who did these acts. Then you are doing something that is right and you should have all of the things that you are asking for.
the big kahuna June 14, 2012 at 03:23 PM
Thank you for an intelligent post. We are sweeping this under the rug as we always do in this town. remember this when something bigger happens.
CG June 14, 2012 at 05:38 PM
What are you thinking Mark! It's kinder to dissect those frogs in biology! I went to LHS years ago, more years than I'd like to say, LOL. Every year there would be pranks pulled, there's no bylaws as to what pranks are carried out, did you realize that you are dealing with teenagers here? If I had to guess, the kids who spray painted the school are a small group of nerdy burnouts who thought this was funny. When I went to school they were selling t-shirts that half the school was wearing that said Lynbrook's High, the senior prank was to steal the Gouz chicken and put it on the roof of the old passway, one earlier class put a VW Beetle up there. The graffitti thing was vandalism and not right but the frog thing is kind of funny in my opinion. Kids do stupid things, give me a break, maybe we should find who did it and bring them in front of a firing squad. Give it a rest already.
Innocent Senior June 14, 2012 at 10:57 PM
Being a senior, I am embarrassed by both the vandalism and the animal cruelty. I was completely unaware that this was going to happen. The only seniors that knew about it, were the ones that did it. It was not agreed upon by the entire senior class, not even half of it. The "senior prank" was really just Vaseline on the door knobs and railings. Yes, it was dumb, but it was not cruel and did not, to my knowledge, hurt or offend anyone. The entire class should NOT be held accountable for the actions of a select few students-- who may or may not be seniors, or Lynbrook students at all. I personally have spent hundreds of dollars on prom between dresses, tickets, limos, nails, and shoes. I was not in any way involved with any of the three aforementioned acts and therefore should not be robbed of my money (and my parents') and my last night with my class. And for the record, if I knew who committed the vandalism, I would absolutely anonymously report them. But unfortunately, I do not.
