Car Fire Shuts Down Southern State in West Hempstead

Lakeview firefighters battle parkway blaze Sunday afternoon after occupants escape burning vehicle.

The Southern State Parkway was reduced to a parking lot Sunday afternoon as Lakeview volunteer firefighters battled a car fire near Exit 18 - Eagle Avenue in West Hempstead.

The blaze broke out around 1 p.m. in the eastbound lanes. According to initial reports the occupants, which included children, were trapped inside the vehicle, but all managed to escape to safety before the arrival of emergency crews.

All eastbound lanes were shut down for about 20 minutes while the fire was extinguished and the vehicle was removed from the parkway.
