A young woman was struck by a car while attempting to cross Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead late Sunday evening.
Rain had just begun to fall on the busy roadway when the pedestrian, described as a female in her late teens or early 20s, was hit by a small white sedan just after 9:30 p.m. in front of the near Peach Grove Drive.
The vehicle that hit the woman immediately stopped at the scene and the injured pedestrian was taken by ambulance to Winthrop Hospital in Mineola. The extent of her injuries was unclear.
For the past three years, a 16-mile stretch of Hempstead Turnpike, including the section of the roadway that runs through West Hempstead, has been named the for pedestrians by the non-profit Tri-State Transportation Campaign.
