Cops: 81 Accidents Because of Snow

Number of collisions still rising as snow keeps falling.

Nassau County Police are tackling a spike in car accidents as a result of Thursday's blizzard-like storm.

81 car accidents were reported in Nassau County as of 2:45 p.m. Thursday, police confirmed.

Officers said the number is a significant increase in accidents compared to the average day.

With visibility plummeting to less than a quarter mile, the latest numbers demonstrate the all-around danger of attempting to travel in the snow Thursday.

Even travelers on LIRR faced delays and cancellations throughout the day. Service was "extremely limited" by 2 p.m. though it has improved with service "on or close" to the schedule as of 3 p.m.

Why do we have more accidents on Long Island in the winter than in all of Alaska and Canada combined? They prepare for the winter snow and ice with adequate removal and salting and sanding and chemicals and we skimp because the money goes to decorating towns for businesses instead.

don't blame the roads blame the drivers fast driving in and very bad conditions

Agree with robert harison. People don't adjust their driving to the weather/road conditions. And then there are the fools who throw snow out into already cleared streets when they dig out their driveway or car. That freezes and creates dangerous patches of ice.
