Cops: One Killed in Southern State Crash

Highway shut down for hours Friday morning.

One person has died after an early morning accident on the Southern State Parkway, according to New York State Police.

A Mazda was traveling east on the Southern State when it collided a Suzuki SUV from behind, according to police. The Mazda crashed into a south shoulder guardrail, traveling through it, and struck a pole and several trees before stopping, cops said.

The crash happened at 6:43 a.m. just west of Exit 20 for Grand Avenue in South Hempstead, according to reports.

The driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead at the scene, police reported.

A passenger in the Suzuki was rushed to Mercy Hospital and treated for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The identities of those involved in the accident have not yet been released pending notification of family, police said.

Police reopened all lanes after hours of closures and delays. Delays reportedly backed up all the way to the Cross Island Parkway.
