Cops Probe Possible Car Theft in West Hempstead

Residents report flurry of police activity in area Thursday.

Nassau County Police are investigating a report of a possible stolen vehicle in the West Hempstead area.

Residents reported hearing a police helicopter circling over the area Thursday afternoon and spotted several patrol cars on Oakford Street and Woodfield Road.

About five police vehicles sped down Oakford Street around 12:45 p.m., one West Hempstead resident told Patch.

Another local woman witnessed cops patrolling Oakford Street and surrounding blocks for more than hour and said one patrol car was stationed in the parking lot of the vacant supermarket on Woodfield Road.

A spokesman for the Nassau County Police said the activity was related to an investigation of a possible stolen car in the area, but had no further information to disclose. An unconfirmed source said the police were searching for two teenage suspects.

Patch will continue to update this story as more details become available.
