Cops Probe Possible Car Theft in West Hempstead

Residents report flurry of police activity in area Thursday.

Nassau County Police are investigating a report of a possible stolen vehicle in the West Hempstead area.

Residents reported hearing a police helicopter circling over the area Thursday afternoon and spotted several patrol cars on Oakford Street and Woodfield Road.

About five police vehicles sped down Oakford Street around 12:45 p.m., one West Hempstead resident told Patch.

Another local woman witnessed cops patrolling Oakford Street and surrounding blocks for more than hour and said one patrol car was stationed in the parking lot of the vacant supermarket on Woodfield Road.

A spokesman for the Nassau County Police said the activity was related to an investigation of a possible stolen car in the area, but had no further information to disclose. An unconfirmed source said the police were searching for two teenage suspects.

Patch will continue to update this story as more details become available.

Not true @Big Kahuna We have been publishing the crime reports since the consolidation, as you can see below: -Lynbrook Crime: Motorcycle Stolen, Search for Hit-and-Run Witness: http://malverne-lynbrook.patch.com/articles/lynbrook-crime-report-motocycle-stolen-search-for-witness-in-hit-and-run -Lynbrook PD: Astoria Bank Customers Robbed, IRS Scam Victim: http://malverne-lynbrook.patch.com/articles/lynbrook-pd-astoria-bank-customers-robbed-irs-scam-victim -Lynbrook PD: Home Burglarized, DWI and Illegal Massage Arrests: http://malverne-lynbrook.patch.com/articles/lynbrook-pd-home-burglarized-dwi-and-illegal-massage-arrests For some reason, the Lynbrook Police did not send over the crime report last week. This is the first time it has happened and I've reached out to the department to resolve this problem. Additionally, we've been covering breaking Lynbrook Police news, as well as the village, school boards, and community events, so I'm not sure why you would make such a claim. -Tara Conry Local Editor, Malverne-West Hempstead-Lynbrook Patch

Tara, these are almost a month old. Has there been no crime in Lynbrook this month??
Tara Conry August 17, 2012 at 12:58 PM
I left one out. The last report was published in early August: http://malverne-lynbrook.patch.com/articles/lynbrook-pd-bank-accounts-infiltrated-dwi-arrests The Lynbrook Police did not send the report last week and this week's has yet to come in also. I've been emailing the officer who compiles and sends them to us, but just learned he's been out on vacation. I'm trying to find out now if someone else has taken over this responsibility in his absence.
