Cops Say Lakeview Teen Fled, Assaulted Officers

A 16-year-old was charged with assault, resisting arrest, attempted larceny and criminal trespass.

A teenager who had officers through West Hempstead Tuesday evening now faces assault, resisting arrest and other charges.

The 16-year-old from Lakeview was nabbed by Nassau County cops around 4 p.m. on June 14 after a 15-minute pursuit that involved a police helicopter.

According to Fifth Squad detectives, he was observed by a witness on Melvin Avenue attempting to break into two vehicles. The defendant allegedly tried to get into the first vehicle, but was unsuccessful. They say he then attempted to break into a second vehicle, but after failing again, walked away.

Fifth Precinct Police officers who responded to the scene say the teen fled as they approached. They later located him hiding by a set of steps in a rear yard on Melvin Avenue. According to police, he became violent and began flailing his arms, allegedly punching the officers to avoid arrest. During the struggle, a police officer reportedly sustained a minor injury, a dislocated finger.

The teen is being charged with second degree Assault, Resisting Arrest, Petit Larceny (Attempt) and two counts of third degree Criminal Trespass. He will be arraigned on Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
