Cops: West Hempstead Teen Caught Stealing, Endangering Infant

Denise Irby charged with grand larceny, child endangerment and marijuana possession.

A West Hempstead woman was apprehended Monday night at a JC Penney's store in Garden City where authorities say she and three others attempted to steal more than $2,000-worth of clothes.

Denise Irby, 18, was nabbed by the store's loss prevention agents as she exited the building on Old Country Road with three other teens around 9 p.m. on April 11. Irby, along with the other young women, Caswell Jenkins, 19, of Manhasset, and Jessica Stanley, 19, and Britney Goins, 18, both of Great Neck, were soon arrested by Nassau County Police.

According to detectives, Stanley was carrying a 14-day-old baby boy while Goins pushed the child's stroller through the store. They say all four teens filled the carriage up with merchandise they removed from the display racks and then entered a fitting room stall. Once inside, they concealed the clothing - worth $2,325 - inside the carriage along with the infant, and then attempted to leave the store without paying for the merchandise.

When authorities arrived, they released the baby to a family member, but charged all four teens with Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the first degree and Grand Larceny in the fourth degree. Detectives also found marijuana on Irby, and charged her with Unlawful Possession.

The women were expected to be arraigned Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
