Crime Nearby: Man Arrested For Driving with .19 BAC, Kids in Car

A round-up of the top crime stories of the week from neighboring communities.

The following information was supplied by the Nassau County Police Department, Rockville Centre Police Department and Garden City Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate guilt.

Arrests

  • On Aug. 1 at 7:46 p.m., Vincent J. O’Brien, 44, of Rockville Centre, was arrested for criminal obstruction of breathing and menacing in the third degree following an investigation by police personnel at his residence on Vernon Avenue.

  • On Aug. 1 at 3:40 p.m., Stephen Todd Lavenda, 49, of Roosevelt, was arrested for theft of services following an investigation by police personnel on Merrick Road in Rockville Centre.

  • On Aug. 8, a Garden City police officer arrested a 25-year-old female from Oyster Bay for theft of a blazer, valued at $40, from Sears.

  • On Aug. 8, a Garden City police officer apprehended a 29-year-old male from Hempstead for driving with a suspended registration and a suspended license.

  • On Aug. 9, a Garden City police officer stopped a vehicle for passing red traffic lights on Old Country Road at Cherry Valley Avenue and also at West Street. The driver, a 22-year-old male from Queens, was subsequently arrested for DWI (.09 percent blood alcohol content), possession of marijuana and passing two red traffic signals.

  • On Aug. 10, a Garden City Detectives arrested a 21-year-old male from Brooklyn for the theft of $2,190 from an account belonging to a Garden City business by using a fraudulent check.

  • On Aug. 11, a Garden City Detectives arrested a 22-year-old male from Freeport for leaving the scene of a property damage auto accident on Franklin Avenue on July 31. The subject was also charged with driving with a suspended license, unlicensed operation, suspended registration and uninsured operation.

  • Leandra’s Law arrest - At approximately 8 p.m. on Aug. 11, a Garden City police officer was on patrol when he observed a vehicle traveling north on Franklin Avenue make a left turn onto Stewart Avenue in violation of no left turn signs. The officer then observed the vehicle veering left over the center divider lines while traveling west on Stewart Avenue. Upon stopping the vehicle, the officer determined that the driver, a 48-year-old male from Hempstead, was intoxicated (.19 percent blood alcohol content). The officer also observed that there were four other occupants in the vehicle, including two children, ages 2 and 4. The subject was placed under arrest for two counts of aggravated DWI (Leandra’s Law), two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, two traffic violations and uninsured operation.
