An Olympic gold medalist and former Long Island track star was arrested for an incident on the Long Beach boardwalk last week. Derek Adkins, a standout track athlete at Malverne High School and Georgia Tech before winning the 400-meter hurdles at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, was arrested and charged with obstructing governmental administration at Riverside Boulevard boardwalk after police say he refused leave the bike safety lane at about 12 a.m. on Sept. 12.
A Rockville Centre man has pleaded guilty to smuggling cigarettes from New York to Kentucky, causing New York to lose more than a $1 million in taxes, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Joseph Ruda, 62, admitted to a scheme where he shipped more than 58,000 untaxed cigarettes cartons to Kentucky, which were then mailed to other states. Kentucky lost nearly $175,000 in excise taxes due to the smuggling. The scheme was in violation of the Jenkins Act, which regulates mail-order sales of cigarettes.
A Point Lookout man was charged with storing approximately 440 gallons of gasoline inside his home on Thursday.
According to the Nassau County Police Department, Arson and Bomb Squad detectives responded to a tip that Edward Randolph, 63, was improperly and illegally storing gasoline at his home on Inwood Avenue.
A New Hyde Park woman was arrested Wednesday afternoon on charges of an assault that police say occurred at an apartment on Jericho Turnpike.
According to detectives, at 5:33 p.m. on Sept. 11, officers responded to a disturbance at an apartment at 102 Jericho Turnpike involving Hazel Gutierrez-Torres, 21, and a 24 year old male.
