Crimes Nearby: Deadly Domestic Dispute, 'Kidnapping,' Murder Conviction

A round-up of the top crime stories of the week from neighboring communities.

Nassau County Homicide Squad detectives report the arrest of a Hempstead man for a homicide that occurred Feb. 7 at 1:33 p.m. near the Garden City border. 

Hempstead police responded to a domestic disturbance at a Roosevelt Street residence in Hempstead and upon arrival were met by Leonard Reed, 45, who opened fire on officers, detectives report.

Officers returned gunfire, incapacitating Reed and placing him under arrest, according to police. He was transported to a local hospital where he was admitted for treatment of non-life threatening gunshots wounds. No officers were struck during the confrontation. 

Further investigation of the scene revealed the body of a 42-year-old female with multiple gunshot and stab wounds deceased on the kitchen floor, police said. Also inside the residence was a 26-year-old female victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to detectives. She was taken to a local hospital and also admitted for treatment of a non-life threatening gunshot injury. 

Reed has been charged with murder, second degree, and will be arraigned "as soon as practical," police said. 

The investigation is continuing.

Driver Convicted in Yonkers Murder Involving RVC Duo

The man who drove the getaway car for two Rockville Centre residents after they murdered a Yonkers woman in 2010 was also convicted of murder Friday.

English Thomas, 29, of Uniondale, faces 25 years to life in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder along with three other felony counts, Newsday [paid link].

Police said that Thomas was the getaway driver for Charles Parsley, 28, and Kasaun White, 30, both of Old Mill Court, after the duo murdered 36-year-old Yonkers resident Sandra Hackley and then shot her husband and 12-year-old daughter back in April 2010.

Parsley and White were sentenced to 75 years to life in state prison for the crime back in June.

In October 2012, Thomas was charged with a separate attempted murder stemming from a February 2011 incident in Rockville Centre. According to police, on Feb. 21 2011, Thomas allegedly fired shots at a rival Bloods gang member near the Vibe Lounge in Rockville Centre.

Thomas is still awaiting trial for the alleged attempted murder in RVC.

Police: Avalon Resident Discharges Assault Rifle

An Avalon Garden City resident was arrested Saturday after allegedly discharging his AR-15 Stag Arms Model semi-automatic assault rifle inside his apartment, according to Third Squad detectives.

An investigation revealed the rifle belonged to 49-year-old Raymond Marro, Jr.

Nassau County police report the building supervisor discovered a hole in the sheet rock and damage to a pipe in an adjacent apartment that caused flooding in the East Garden City building. 

Officers secured the weapon and placed the defendant under arrest. There were no injuries.

Marro is charged with reckless endangerment, first degree; two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, third degree; and criminal mischief, fourth degree. He was slated for arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.

Rockville Centre Resident Falls Victim to Fake Kidnapping

A Rockville Centre resident fell victim to a fake kidnapping scam last month.

The woman reported to Rockville Centre Police on Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. that an unknown person(s) called, claiming to have kidnapped her son, and demanded that she wire a total of $3,100 to Puerto Rico via Western Union.

After complying with the demands, the woman then determined that none of her children had been kidnapped; they were safe and unharmed.

Two Suspects Wanted in Connection With TD Bank Robbery

Nassau County police are seeking the public's help in trying to capture those responsible for a bank robbery in Garden City Jan. 30.

According to the county's Robbery Squad, two suspects entered TD Bank located at 855 Franklin Ave. in Garden City at 7:05 p.m. last Wednesday and verbally demanded money from a teller. The teller, police said, handed one of the subjects an undetermined amount of cash. Police said the female subject took the cash and the two then fled on foot eastbound towards the parking lot behind the bank.

The suspects, according to police, are described as a female African American 5'6" 30 years of age weighing 185 lbs. wearing a white hooded sweat jacket and a black BB cap and a male African American 5'9" wearing a knit cap black Boston Celtics jacket and jeans.
