UPDATE: 84-Year-Old RVC Resident Fatally Struck on Merrick Road
A Rockville Centre resident was struck and killed by a car Thursday morning on Merrick Road in Rockville Centre.
According to Nassau County detectives, around 11:45 a.m., a 59-year-old male was operating a 2003 Peterbilt tractor trailer eastbound in the right lane of Merrick Road at Oceanside Road when he struck Juan Galdos, 84, of Rockville Centre.
Galdos was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Galdos was crossing Merrick Road from north to south in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision. Safety checks were performed on the vehicle at the scene.
Detectives report no apparent criminality at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
Merrick Road was closed in both directions between Cumberland Street and North Long Beach Road, but reopened at 3:53 p.m. Oceanside Road was also closed between Merrick Road and Oswald Court.
Man Stops Intoxicated Robber from Stealing Car
The Nassau County Police arrested a Franklin Square man for a robbery that occurred Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in Franklin Square.
According to police, the 63-year-old male victim, started his 2010 Honda CRV, which was parked in his driveway on Adams Avenue, and then re-entered his residence. While inside his home, he observed his vehicle backing out of the driveway.
The victim ran to the car and opened the driver’s door, where he discovered John Brito, 42, of Frankin Square, in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. The victim struggled with Brito to gain control of the vehicle as it traveled westbound on Adams Avenue. The vehicle came to a stop approximately 50 feet down the road.
A 47-year-old male passerby came to the assistance of the victim and removed Brito from the vehicle. They restrained him until police arrived. The Fourth Precinct officers placed Brito under arrest.
During the investigation, they discovered a bottle of wine in the vehicle that did not belong to the victim. The officers transported Brito to Central Testing for arrest processing. There were no injuries reported.
Brito is charged with second-degree Robbery, Driving While Ability Impaired, Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Ability Impaired-Combined Influence, two counts of first-degree Aggravated Unlicensed, and two counts of third-degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Vehicle. He was arraigned on Jan. 25 at First District Court in Hempstead.
Elmont Man Charged with Promoting Child Porn
An Elmont man was arrested Tuesday for promoting child pornography.
Nassau County Police's Crimes Against Property Squad arrested Jonathan J. Silva, 28, around 6:45 p.m. in his Elmont residence without incident and charged with Promoting Sexual Performance of a Child. According to detectives, Silva, while using an online file sharing network, did possess and promote numerous videos containing sexual acts by a child.
Silva is charged with five counts of Promoting Sexual Performance of a Child and five counts of Possession Sexual Performance of a child. He was arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
Citibank in East Garden City was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon, according to Nassau County police.
According to detectives, a white, male suspect, entered the bank located at 600 Old County Road at around 2:45 p.m. and presented a demand note to the teller.
The subject then verbally demanded money while briefly displaying a handgun, to which the teller complied. The suspect fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash towards the west doors of the building in which the bank is located.
There were eight employees and one customer present at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.
He was described as being 45-55 years old with a mustache, wearing a light blue jacket, beige shirt, a dark baseball cap and sunglasses.

DNA Nabs Valley Stream Man for Robberies
A Valley Stream man was arrested in Hempstead Thursday for robbing a business and a home in 2011 and 2012.
According to detectives, on April 25, 2011 at 2 a.m., Sakei Hicks, 32, allegedly entered the Mystic Cellular Phone/Variety Store at 81 Main St. in Hempstead by breaking the glass of the front door. Hicks then removed cellular phones, assorted jewelry and electronic games, police say.
Cops say that on Nov. 2, 2012 at 9 p.m., Hicks also gained entry to a residence on Prospect Avenue in Westbury by pushing open a rear window. He then allegedly removed a flat screen television, an unknown amount of U.S. currency and a jewelry box.
Hicks was identified through DNA evidence left at the burglary scene in Hempstead. He was located by Hempstead police officers at Washington Street and Van Cott Street and taken into custody.
Hicks was charged with second-degree and third-degree burglary and was arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
Alleged Identity Thief Caught in Rockville Centre
A Valley Stream man was arrested in Rockville Centre for identity theft Saturday afternoon after a month-long police investigation that stemmed from two December incidents at Cabo on N Park Avenue.
According to Rockville Centre Police, a complainant from Long Beach reported that between Dec. 18 and Dec. 19, an unknown person made an unauthorized transaction of $554.24 against his American Express card and of $327.45 against his Capitol One card at Cabo.
A subsequent investigation led Nassau County detectives to Vinson Noel, 28, of Valley Stream.
The investigation gave reason to conduct a surveillance of Noel, who, on Saturday, again attempted to purchase food and beverages at Cabo with two different fraudulent credit cards, both of which were denied, police said.
Saturday's incident involving Noel was observed by investigating detective who followed him out of the restaurant and placed him under arrest, police said.
Noel is charged with two counts of possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, three counts of identity theft in the second degree, identity theft in the third degree and two counts of petit larceny. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday.

Valley Stream Bank Robbed
Nassau County Police are investigating a bank robbery that occurred in Valley Stream Thursday afternoon.

According to detectives, an unknown black male suspect entered the Roslyn Savings Bank located at 75 North Central Ave. around 2:15 p.m. and made a verbal demand for money. After obtaining an undetermined amount of cash, the suspect fled on foot eastbound on Stein Street.
The suspect is further described as 25 to 30 years of age, 5’11” tall, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black knit gloves, black scarf and green pants. No injuries were reported. Five employees and one customer were present at the time of the robbery.
