Cedarhurst Man Arrested for Gang Assault

A Cedarhurst man was arrested on Monday, May 7, after he allegedly beat and robbed a 48-year-old in Roosevelt in March, police said.

Artawon Wright, 18, of Cedarhurst, was charged with two counts of first-degree robbery, gang assault in the first degree, criminal mischief in the second degree and third-degree criminal mischief.

On March 26 at 6:20 p.m., the male victim was standing in a driveway at a Mirin Avenue residence when four men approached him. Wright allegedly began kicking the victim in the body until he fell to the ground, police said. Two other men — who have not been arrested — then hit the victim with a baseball bat and a golf club.

Cops: Man Hit Victim With Wrench

Police arrested an Elmont man on Wednesday, May 9, after he allegedly hit another man on the top of his head with a wrench in Hewlett.

On Monday at about 1:30 p.m., Jason Shure, 20, of Elmont, allegedly struck the 21-year-old victim in the vicinity of Peninsula Boulevard and Mill Road, police said. The victim sustained a laceration to his head that required medical attention at a local area hospital.

Teen Attacked by 3 Men in Lawrence, Cops Say

Wednesday, May 9, three men attacked and robbed a 14-year-old boy in Lawrence, police said.

At 4:20 p.m., the teen was walking in the vicinity of Rockaway Turnpike and Pearsall Avenue when three male subjects approached him, according to police. The first suspect bumped into the victim and demanded his phone. As the teen tried to run, the suspect grabbed him, knocking his cell phone to the ground and causing it to shatter.

The first suspect then punched the victim in the face, knocking him to the ground, police said. The second suspect proceeded to kick the victim in the abdomen and ribs. The victim saw the third subject reach for something in his pants pocket, which he thought may be a weapon.

The victim was then able to get up and flee the scene. The suspects fled in an unknown direction. The victim was treated by a Nassau EMT for minor injuries.

Police: Man Used Skimming Device at Cedarhurst Bank

A man was arrested in Cedarhurst Saturday morning for allegedly using a skimming device at a local bank.

According to Nassau County detectives, on April 21, an unknown person installed a skimming device at an ATM at the JP Morgan Chase Bank located at 446 Central Ave. in Cedarhurst. The defendant, Mircea Popescu-Onea, 25, with no known address, then used the information attained to remove more than $8,400 from various customer accounts.

Inwood Man Arrested for DWI After Crashing Into Gas Station

An Inwood man was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with numerous driving violations including aggravated DWI after he allegedly crashed his car into a gas station and pinned an employee against the store's counter.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 12:30 a.m., Jorge Alvarenga, 37, was operating a 2002 Ford northbound on Henry Street. As the vehicle passed Burnside Avenue, it left the roadway striking barriers protecting gas pumps at the Mobil located at 605 Burnside Ave.

The vehicle continued into the building where a 46-year-old male attendant was working, police said. The victim was pinned between the vehicle and store counter.

Police: Man Attacks Dice Game Opponent

On Sunday, a Far Rockaway man allegedly punched another man in the face repeatedly after losing money in a dice game, police said.

At 9 p.m., the 25-year-old victim was placing dice at Inwood Park with some acquaintances, including the defendant, Walter Velasquez, 34.

After winning the money, the victim decided he wanted to leave the game. That’s when police said Velasquez “became enraged” that he would not have an opportunity to win his money back and attacked the victim, punching him in the face repeatedly and knocking him to the ground.

While the victim was on the ground, Velasquez reached into his pants pocket and took $150 and left the scene on foot. The victim then called 911.
