Crimes Nearby: Local Docs Charged in LIRR Scam, Car-Ambulance Crash Injures Volunteers

A rundown of incidents that occurred during the past week in areas surrounding Malverne and West Hempstead.

The following information was supplied by the Nassau, Lynbrook, Long Beach and Rockville Centre police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate convictions.

An Oceanside man was arrested early Friday morning after he allegedly broke into a local CVS and stole $400 worth of cigarettes, police said.

According to detectives, Rockville Centre police responded to an alarm at the CVS located on the corner of Oceanside and Merrick roads at around 1:15 a.m. Cops saw Patrick McHale, 21, walking from the pharmacy parking lot carrying a large plastic bag and a fire extinguisher.

After cops inspected the grounds and found that the CVS glass doors were broken and an entry had been made, they searched McHale's bag and found $400 worth of cigarette cartons.

Two local doctors were among 10 people arrested by the FBI Thursday and accused of participating in a $1 billion disability scam for retiring LIRR workers.

The two doctors charged were Dr. Peter Ajemian of Syosset and Dr. Peter Lesniewski of Rockville Centre. Ajemian was employed at a Rockville Centre-based practice until his termination in late 2008. He currently operates a practice in Baldwin. Lesniewski is an orthopedic surgeon in East Meadow.

Court documents accused them of scamming the retirement system by filing false claims of injuries so they could collect an extra benefit from the Railroad Retirement Board.

Five Lynbrook  Department volunteers were released from a local hospital as of Thursday after a car collided with an ambulance on Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook.

The volunteers injured, as young as 18 years old, were on their way back from an accident on Tuesday when a Hyundai failed to stop at the intersection on Vincent Avenue and crashed into them, Lynbrook Mayor William Hendrick said.

The injuries sustained ranged from bruises to a neck injury and a separated shoulder, Hendrick said.

Man Claiming to Need Help Tries to Rob Teen

A man sitting on a curb in Valley Stream that claimed to be injured attempted to rob a teenager on Monday, police said.

The 19-year-old male victim was walking southbound on Cochran Place near Spruce Lane when he came upon the male black subject. The subject claimed he was injured and asked the victim for assistance. When the victim went to help, the subject suddenly grabbed him and demanded his property.

The victim was able to fend off the subject and run to a nearby firehouse.

The subject is described to be about 20 years old with a thin build and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.
