Bronx Man Arrested for Murder in Hempstead

A Bronx man is being charged with murder after he allegedly shot and killed a man in Hempstead during an altercation Sunday night.

According to Nassau County Homicide Squad detectives, two males were involved in an altercation on the corner of Linden Avenue and Linden Place on Jan. 13 around 8 p.m. One the men, Jazz Murphy, 17, of the Bronx, allegedly shot a 34-year-old male victim from Freeport. The victim was transported to Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced deceased by hospital staff at 8:40 pm. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.  

After an investigation, Murphy was placed under arrest without incident. He is being charged with second-degree Murder and will be arraigned on Monday, Jan. 14, at First District Court in Hempstead.

Garden City South Teen Accused of Making Terroristic Threat at School

A Garden City South teen is accused of making a terroristic threat inside his classroom at the Nassau BOCES Rosemary Kennedy Schoolin Wantagh Wednesday, according to Nassau County Fifth Squad detectives.

Joshua Barley, 18, of Ardsley Boulevard, wrote on the blackboard that he wanted to "assassinate the principal and take over the school," according to a witness, police said late Wednesday.

The principal was informed and then notified police, according to a police report.

The Rosemary Kennedy School serves students ages 9 to 21 with multiple and moderate to severe developmental disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorders, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities. 

Barley is being charged with making a terroristic threat, a D felony, and was arraigned Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Hempstead Man Charged in Fatal Shooting

Cops say they have arrested the man responsible for the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old Hempstead man in early December.

The Nassau County Police Department's Homicide Squad, along with the Nassau County Fugitive Squad, U.S. Marshalls and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department conducted a joint investigation, which led to the arrest of Diquan McClough, 20, of Hempstead. He was placed under arrest without incident on Jan. 10 at 10:40 a.m. in Augusta, Georgia. 

The fatal shooting occurred in Hempstead on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012 at 4:23 p.m. According to detectives, the victim, Quavis Ford, 20, of Hempstead, was in front of 100 Terrace Ave. when he was shot by a black male.  The victim was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was pronounced by hospital staff.                                    

McClough is charged with second-degree Murder and was arraigned on Saturday, Jan. 12, at First District Court in Hempstead.

Trio Arrested for Robbing Teen in Valley Stream

Three Rosedale men have been charged with robbing a 15-year-old boy in Valley Stream on Saturday evening.

According to detectives, the victim and his 15-year-old friend leaving Forest Road School, located at 16 Forest Rd, on Jan. 12 around 5 p.m. when they were allegedly approached by Rosedale residents Deyandre Bartley, 17, Daniel Smith 18, and Aaron Benton 17.

Smith reportedly asked the victim what time it was and as the boy removed his phone from his pocket, Bartley allegedly shoved him to the ground, while grabbing the phone from his hand, cops say.

The three suspects then fled on foot, but were located on Furth Road a short time later by police officers from the Fourth Precinct. They were placed under arrest and the victim’s phone was recovered. The victim suffered minor injuries.

All three defendants are charged with second-degree Robbery and were arraigned on Sunday, Jan. 13, at First District Court in Hempstead.

Cops: Burglars Set Fire to Apartment Building 

Nassau County Police arrested two Hempstead men for allegedly torching an apartment building after their attempt to burglarize one of the units failed. 

According to detectives, Reginald Summers, 19, and Harry Gardner, 29, entered 150 Washington Ave. on Sept. 10 and attempted to burglarize an apartment in the building. After being unable to gain access to the apartment, they allegedly poured an accelerant on the door mat of a different apartment and ignited it.

The fire caused minor damage to the door and was extinguished by the Hempstead Fire Department. There were no injuries reported. 

Detectives obtained video surveillance of the suspects, which led to their arrests. Summers was located at his residence on Jan. 1 and placed under arrest without incident. He was charged with second-degree arson and second-degree burglary. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Jan. 2.

Nassau County Police Bureau of Special Operations officers located Gardner in Hempstead on Jan. 11 at 9:20 p.m. and placed him under arrest. He was charged with second-degree arson and second-degree burglary, and  arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Jan. 12.

Homeless Taxi Driver Arrested

Rockville Centre Police arrested Anton Boutros, a 57-year-old homeless taxi driver, on Jan. 6 at 9:23 p.m. for aggravated unlicensed operation in the second degree and vehicle and traffic law offenses following an investigation by police personnel in the vicinity of Sunrise Highway and N. Forest Avenue in Rockville Centre.

Police Searching for Gunman in Hempstead Shooting 

Nassau County Police's Third Squad is investigating an assault that occurred in Hempstead on Sunday at 3:45 a.m.

According to detectives, a 23-year-old male victim was walking with his 29-year-old male cousin on Washington Street in the vicinity of Seitz Avenue when they were approached by three unknown male black suspects. A verbal confrontation occurred and one of the suspects displayed a handgun and  then shot the 23-year-old victim in the left shoulder.The suspects then fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction.

The victim was driven to an area hospital by private auto, where he was admitted and is listed in stable condition.

The suspect with the handgun is further described as approximately 28 years old, 6’02” tall, wearing all black clothing. Subject #2 is described as 20-26 years old, 5’07” to 5’08” tall, thin build wearing all black clothing. There is no further description of the third subject.

8K Copper Lawn Fountain Stolen

On Dec. 28 at 12:47 a.m., a Rockville Centre resident reported that unknown person(s) stole a copper lawn fountain valued at $8,000 from the lawn of his DeMott Avenue residence sometime between at 5:15 p.m. on Dec. 27 and 12:15 a.m. on Dec. 28.

Police: Brooklyn Teen Used Counterfeit Money at Roosevelt Field

A Brooklyn teenager was arrested Friday night after he allegedly used counterfeit money and attempted to flee from police at Roosevelt Field.

According to detectives, around 8:30 p.m., Daniel Lyte, 19, made a purchase at Gymboree in the Roosevelt Field Mall using counterfeit U.S. currency.

When a Nassau County Police Officer from the Third Precinct responded to the store, the defendant attempted to flee. As the officer attempted to place Lyte under arrest, he continued to struggle, police said. While on the ground, Lyte attempted to tear up the counterfeit money in his possession.

Lyte was eventually placed under arrest, at which time he was found to be in possession of several counterfeit bills and fraudulent credit cards, police said. There were no injuries from the struggle.

Lyte was charged with four counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument, three counts of possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, tampering with physical evidence, obstruction of governmental administration in the second degree and resisting arrest. He was arraigned on Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead.
