Downed Wires Shut Down Busy West Hempstead Street [Updated]

Groton Place, between Westminster Road and Mayfair Avenue, closed for second straight day.

UPDATE: As of 3 p.m., Groton Place has been re-opened.

A busy West Hempstead street remains closed for a second day after a tree branch pulled down some wires from a utility pole.

Groton Place, between Westminster Road and Mayfair, has been shut down since late Friday evening by low-hanging wires.

Nassau County Police have been notified numerous times about the situation, along with telephone and cable representatives, but as of noon Sunday, nothing had been done to fix the wires and re-open the street.

The street serves as a pass-through from the one side of town to the other and the closure is leaving motorists in a position of having to go into reverse and turn around once they reach the police tape.
