Driver Escapes Before Car Bursts Into Flames

Car fire shuts down Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead Saturday morning.

A black sports car burst into flames outside the in West Hempstead Saturday morning, only moments after the driver escaped.

The man had seen smoke coming from under the hood of his car, so he pulled over near Greenway Street South and evacuated just in the nick of time.

Local firefighters were on the scene quickly to extinguish the blaze, but a portion of Hempstead Turnpike was shut down in both directions for a short time.
