A female driver was seriously injured early Friday morning when her car struck a utility pole in West Hempstead.
The accident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Hempstead Avenue near Elm Street. The impact of the crash knocked a traffic signal down. The vehicle also smashed through the fence of the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County's Samuel & Elizabeth Bass Golding Elementary School.
West Hempstead volunteer firefighters used the "Jaws of Life" to cut through the car to gain access to the injured driver.
Nassau County Police were investigating whether speed and/or alcohol were factors in the accident. No further information is available at this time.
