Bus Fire Breaks Out at Lynbrook School

Local firefighters respond to bus fire at Davison Avenue School.

A fire broke out around 4 a.m. in the rear yard of Davison Avenue School in Lynbrook Sunday morning. A loud explosion woke Lynbrook residents living near the elementary school, who came out of their homes to see flames rising from the three parked buses.

"The first explosion woke me and I came out and saw nothing but smoke and lights [from the fire engines]," said Adam Perjatel, whose house faces the parking lot where the buses were parked. "Then, there was another explosion."

The Lynbrook Fire Department responded to a call that came in at 4:20 a.m. and arrived to the scene promptly.

"They did a good job of getting here quickly," Perjatel added.

Since the police upgraded the incident to a "working fire," the entire Lynbrook Fire Department rushed to the scene.

"Two of the three buses were fully involved and the fire was extending into the third," said Steven Grogan, public information officer and ex-captain for the Lynbrook Fire Department.

Grogan said the fire probably originated in the middle bus, and the explosions that residents heard and the rubber stench that filled the air could most likely be attributed to the tires blowing. The Nassau County Fire Marshal arrived to the scene just before 5 a.m. to begin conducting its investigation.

Davison Avenue School is part of the Malverne School District.
