Fire Rips Through Lakeview Home

Lakeview firefighters respond to a house fire Sunday morning.

A fire tore through a home in Lakeview Sunday morning, adding to what has been a recent uptick in calls that local volunteers have responded to this winter.

The call came into the Lakeview firehouse around 6:40 a.m. on Feb. 13 that a fire broke out inside a home located at 576 Lincoln Avenue. When firefighters arrived to the scene they soon learned that it was a house across the street from this address that was in flames. The front and left side of the residential building were heavily involved, but all the occupants had escaped unharmed. A child was transported to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Lakeview Fire Chief Mike Joyce said about 40 of his members were on scene, with units from Malverne, West Hempstead and Franklin Square providing assistance. It took them about 20 minutes to completely extinguish the fire, which Joyce said appeared to have started in a first floor bedroom although the Nassau County Fire Marshals' office is investigating the cause.

This has been an exceptionally busy few months for Lakeview and other local fire departments. They've had to put out in the area and rescue over 20 canines from some of the smoking buildings.

Joyce said, "There's usually more [fires] in the winter, but this is more than what we've had in the past few years."
