Firefighters Battle Basement Blaze in Malverne

Malverne and Lakeview firefighters respond to home on Lexington Avenue Thursday.

A young Malverne resident came home from school Thursday afternoon to find heavy smoke and flames emanating from the basement.

The Malverne Volunteer Fire Department and Police were the first to arrive at the scene of the house fire on Lexington Avenue. They responded within three minutes of receiving the call, which came in around 2:45 p.m. on June 2, with five fire trucks. Upon arrival, they saw flames protruding from a small window in the driveway, which an officer took out with a fire extinguisher. However, as firefighters entered the basement with two hose lines they found flames and thick smoke had engulfed most of the room.

"The basement was gutted from the fire," Malverne Chief Daniel Morgan said.

They quickly extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading beyond the basement, but the first and second floors sustained considerable damage from the heavy smoke.

"The house is inhabitable," Morgan added.

Approximately 45 volunteer firefighters from Malverne, including its three chiefs, worked to put out the fire and remove the smoke from the home by opening windows and using fans. They received assistance from the Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department, who earlier that day, as well as Elmont and Franklin Square.

In addition to the emergency vehicles and first responders, many curious neighbors and children who had recently been dismissed from school filled the street. They all watched as the firefighters worked to put out the smoking home.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, which has not been revealed at this time.
