Safely Dispose of Old Electronics, Drugs and Ammo - No Questions Asked

Come to the Malverne Civic Association and Malverne Police Department's recycling event Saturday.

Got expired drugs? Old guns and ammunition? Or maybe you have an obsolete computer or boxes of legal documents you don't know what to do with.

Unclutter your home, make your community safer and protect the environment by bringing them to the Malverne train station parking lot Saturday between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There Malverne Civic volunteers and Malverne Police officers will take your unwanted items - no questions asked - and dispose of them properly.

"We're not looking to nail anyone," Malverne Police Chief John Aresta has said regarding the collection of drugs and ammo, which is coordinated by the village police. Anyone who drops off these items are granted amnesty, including those with unlicensed firearms.

The motivation for starting this program was to keep the streets safer and the water sources free of harmful substances. The officers also accept residents' old cell phones, which will be given to an organization that sends prepaid calling cards and cell phones to the troops overseas.

Meanwhile, the Malverne Civic Association runs the E-Cycle and Document Shredding part of the program, not in its fouth year.

"Every year we do this, it gets bigger and better, with more residents dropping off more stuff," Peter Robideau, president of the Malverne Civic Association, has said. "It's important that this e-waste gets recycled, so it doesn't show up in our landfills."

The e-cycling and document-shredding services are free to those who already belong to the Malverne Civic Association. Non-members need to pay $10 to participate in the program, but the price also includes an annual membership in the civic association.
