Girl Injured in Ocean Avenue Crash Dies

Succumbs to injuries from Tuesday's crash near Lynbrook-Malverne border.

An Oceanside girl seriously hurt in a last week has died, a North Shore-LIJ Health System spokesperson confirmed today.

Alexandra Dimenstein, 3, of Oceanside, died on Thursday, two days after the car she was riding in crashed into a tree near Lawrence Avenue and Ocean Avenue in Lynbrook. Her father, Gary, who had been behind the wheel, sustained some minor injuries, and her twin brother, who was also in the back seat, suffered a broken arm. Alexandra went into cardiac arrest.

Two passing motorists — one a New York City paramedic, the other a pediatric nurse — had pulled the girl from the vehicle and began CPR. When emergency technicians arrived at the scene, the little girl did not have a pulse, but they continued adminstering CPR and were able to revive her en route to South Nassau Communities Hospital.

She was transferred to the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York, where was placed on life support and considered to be in an extremely critical state. Her injuries apparently were too severe for her to be saved.

Lynbrook police said no drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. They also said that the twins were seated in their child safety seats, but Alexandra may have not been properly fastened. Gary Dimenstein told Patch earlier that he didn't remember what caused him to lose control of the vehicle.
