Lakeview FD Responds to Two Parkway Crashes

Two accidents near Exit 17 and 18 on the Southern State Parkway had traffic backed up Saturday afternoon.

The Lakeview Fire Department spent their Saturday afternoon on the Southern State Parkway attending to two accidents near Exits 17 and 18.

Shortly before 11 a.m. they received a call that a vehicle overturned while exiting the westbound Southern State parkway at Exit 18 -Eagle Avenue. First responders believe the driver of the sedan may have been traveling over the speed limit, causing the car to flip.

This is the third vehicle that failed to compensate for the extremely short and winding exit ramp in the past few months. New signage showing a 15MPH exit ramp speed had recently been reinstalled. The two occupants of the vehicle were injured and transported by Nassau County ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Minutes later, the firefighters were called to another crash on the parkway, in the eastbound lane on an overpass between Exit 17 and Exit 18. The three-car collision involved vehicles that were participating in a funeral possession.  No one was seriously injured.

The two crashes had traffic backed up and moving extremely slow for over an hour.

They also had an unexpected consequence - preventing the Easter Bunny from arriving at the Egg Hunt at Cornwell Avenue School coordinated by the West Hempstead Lions Club. (The bunny had made arrangements to be escorted by the volunteer firefighters to the event, which was happening around the time the accidents occurred.)
