DWI Crash at Dark West Hempstead Intersection Leaves 1 Seriously Injured

Traffic signals out at Hempstead Turnpike intersection; one driver was allegedly intoxicated.

Two vehicles collided on Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead early Sunday morning at an intersection where the traffic signals have been out for days due to Hurricane Sandy.

The accident occurred at 3:34 a.m. at the intersection at Westminster Road. Crime scene units were on the scene and at least one person sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to an area hospital.

The other driver was arrested at the scene and charged with driving while intoxicated, according to a Nassau County Police spokeswoman.

As of 5:30 a.m., Hempstead Turnpike and Westminster Road were closed in all directions for an accident investigation.
