Lynbrook Fire Department Busy During Monday Storms

The Lynbrook FD had to respond to several calls early Monday.

The Lynbrook Fire Department responded to a number of emergency calls during the height of Monday morning's thunderstorms, according to Ex-Captain Steve Grogan, spokesman for the department.

Firefighters, under the command of Chief Anthony DeCarlo, were first called out during heavy rain at 7:30 a.m. to an auto accident at the intersection of Horton Avenue and Merrick Road.

One of the drivers was trapped in their damaged vehicle, according to Grogan. The extrication team and the emergency medical company responded. Firefighters cut off one of the doors to get to the injured driver. The medical company then transported the driver to the hospital.

The heavy rains caused flooding on Horton Avenue and even put the fields at Greis Park under water.

About an hour later, severe thunderstorms hit the Lynbrook area knocking out power on the western section of the village, including raffic lights and power to all buildings. Power was even out at the Tally-Ho firehouse on Horton Avenue and firefighters had to raise the steel garage door by hand to get the apparatus out.

According to Grogan, the water was so deep at one point on Horton Avenue that passing cars caused waves of water to enter the firehouse through the open bay door.

Due to the power outage, Lynbrook firefighters were next called out for two people trapped in an elevator at 777 Sunrise Highway. Firefighters from truck company freed those occupants. They refused medical assistance from the Medical Company.

At about 9:10 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to reported lighting striking a home at 34 Lincoln Ave. off Atlantic Avenue. Firefighters inspected the house and found no fire or damage.

Soon after that call, the emergency medical company responded to two additional medical emergency calls.
