Lynbrook PD: $4K Watch Stolen From Merrick Road Apartment

A weekly rundown of arrests and case reports from the Lynbrook Police Department.

The following information was supplied by the Lynbrook Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate guilt.

Arrests

  • On July 4 at 1:20 a.m., Devin L. O’Connor, 23, of Merrick, was arrested and charged with DWI, unregistered motor vehicle, uninspected motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle and equipment violation on Broadway in Lynbrook.

  • On July 4 at 1 p.m., Aracelis Y. Torres, 36, of Reading, Pa., was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation on Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook.

  • On July 5 at 10:10 a.m., Dwight O. Herving, 29, of Brooklyn, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana on Merrick Road in Lynbrook.

  • On July 6 at 1:50 a.m., Smith Benoit, 46, of New York, N.Y., was arrested and charged with DWI, unsafe lane change and equipment violation on Merrick Road in Lynbrook.

  • On July 6 at 5 p.m., Calvin D. Evans, 57, of Oakland Gardens, was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, aggravated unlicensed operation (warrant) and failure to signal on Merrick Road in Lynbrook.

  • On July 7 at 1:44 a.m., Albert Appleton Jr., 38, of Cambria Heights, was arrested and charged with DWI and speeding on Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook.

  • Case Reports

    • Identity Theft: At 1:35 p.m. on July 1, a complainant reported that an unknown person(s) opened a US Cellular account in their name in December 2012. The account currently has a balance in the amount of $814.87.

    • Burglary: At 11:15 p.m. on July 1, a complainant reported that an unknown person(s) entered their apartment, located at 528 Merrick Road, and removed a Rolex watch valued at $4,000, a Dell laptop computer valued at $300 and $2,000 cash. The total amount of the loss is $6,300.00. The loss occurred between 10:15 p.m. and 10:57 p.m. on July 1.  

    • Leaving the Scene of an Incident: At 8:30 p.m. on July 2, a complainant reported that while walking southbound on Nieman Avenue and attempting to cross Merrick Road in the crosswalk, the complainant was struck by a unknown vehicle, black in color. The car was operating northbound on Nieman Avenue and making a left turn to go westbound on Merrick Road. The operator of the vehicle failed to stop and make known their identity. The Lynbrook Police Detective Division is currently investigating the accident and anyone with information is asked to call 516-599-3300. Click here to read more about the hit-and-run accident.

    • Petit Larceny: At 1:55 p.m. on July 2, an employee of Crown Ford, located at 420 Merrick Road, reported that an unknown person(s) took a New York State dealer license plate from the business. The plate was removed between June 24 and July 2.
